As far as first nights go, this was not what Josh had expected. Sitting between two nurses and a weird guy that looked like he was dressed in one of those kids’ fancy dress security guard costumes, his mind was going slightly over board with the painfully boring conversation they were inflicting on him. He tried glancing at them and nodding his head as though he actually gave a damn about what they were rambling on about, something about the safety checks at night, while in his head he was chasing giant running marshmallows through a field. He sniggered at the thought causing the three other people to look at him slightly confused. Raising his hands in an apologetic manner and muttering a quick apology, he returned to listen to their drawling voices that were slowly making him wish there was a noose lying about somewhere.
It was his first night shift, the three other people he had never met before and if he was a religious type, he would have thanked god that he hadn’t as their voices alone would have made his time here so far a living nightmare. It was only an hour into the shift when one of the radios they carried about sparked to life making Josh wake suddenly from his zombiefied state they had driven him to and nearly fall sideways of his chair and onto the women beside him. As always when it was a call from the third floor, he was told to stay put and wait for further instructions, informing him yet again that he wasn’t yet trained to deal with the crazy people up there. As soon as the door closed behind them Josh let out a frustrated groan and slid further down the couch until he landed with a thud on the cold floor. God knew how long they were going to be. He sat there and clicked his tongue, hearing it cut through the eerie silence. He started tapping his hands on his knees to a steady rhythm like he would on his drum kit at home, anything to make some noise in this place, and stared around the closet like room.
He noticed the windows in here weren’t like the others he’d seen with the safety glass and locks in place. No, this one looked quite normal from where he sat. He jumped to his feet and took a few strides across the room to inspect it more accurately. Sure enough, as he fiddled about with the latch on it, it opened at his command. He let out a little cheer as a goofy grin crossed his face. He hadn’t had a cigarette for a whole hour now and to him, that was just plain madness. Figuring it would take twice as long and consume more energy to walk out the front to have one, he quickly looked about, listened for any sign of anyone returning then jumped neatly on to the window sill. With his weight and agility, he could pretty much climb on or through anything. This window however, wasn’t as big as he had first expected. With most of his body hanging out, he managed to get his trousers caught on the handle and before he knew it, the floor was coming at him at some speed. He held out his arms and heard a snap as he hit the floor. At first freaked out that his face had been damaged. He then noticed the handle that was once attached firmly to the window now lay on the floor beside him. He picked it up, looked at it for a few seconds with a confused look upon his face then threw it into the garden. As far as he was concerned, nobody would ever notice and if they did, he would just say some mad naked guy ran off with it.
Jumping to his feet again, he dusted himself of and once checking no one had seen him, inspected the small grazes he now had on both hands.
For the time of year, it wasn’t considerably cold and there was no sign of any clouds anywhere. No sound, no form of entertainment what so ever, Josh was completely out of his comfort zone. Muttering some obscene words about how boring the place was, he walked over to the wall that stood above the gardens and climbed up. He had to admit, it did look very pretty at night without all the people running around with buckets on their heads and trying to lick each other including him. He’d had to be dragged away quickly once as forgetting that these ‘people’ were different, he’d pounced on the guy after wiping away a cheek covered in his spit and almost had to improve the poor guys nose with his fist. Needless to say, he was far from impressed.
He dangled his legs over the wall facing the office and slowly let himself fall back until he was dangling by his legs and looking at the gardens upside down instead. A childish giggle left his lips as he quite happily held that position as he casually took another drag on the cancer stick. Luckily, skateboarding gave him the strength to hold on for longer than most people because if he was to fall and nearly hurt his beautiful face again, he would have to cry.
